How to Bake Pizza in an Outdoor Oven

If you’ve ever been to a wood-fired pizza restaurant, you probably noticed and enjoyed the incredible flavor, with pizzas cooked in mere minutes. Did you know that you can replicate that delicious pizza experience – with the crispy crust – in your own backyard, with a King of Hearths outdoor oven?

The King of Hearths Lancelot Outdoor Oven is perfect for cooking pizza and so much more. You can even use it to bake bread! The Lancelot can be custom fit to a new or existing outdoor kitchen. Installation is easy, and the oven arrives ready to be veneered with natural stone or brick that complements your outdoor space.

How to Bake Pizza in the Lancelot Outdoor Oven

Baking pizza in your Lancelot oven doesn’t have to be complicated! Homemade pizza dough is easy to make, and many recipes require little to no resting or rising time. To make it even simpler, use premade pizza dough (available at most grocery stores) and add your favorite toppings. If you aren’t into making pizza from scratch, buy any frozen pizza and let the wood-fired oven transform that pizza into the best you’ve ever eaten! You’ll be amazed at how much flavor wood-fired ovens add to pizza.

What Else Can I Cook in the Lancelot Outdoor Oven?

The options are endless!

  • Potatoes
  • Vegetables, such as onions, mushrooms, sweet peppers and zucchini
  • Salmon (on tinfoil or a foil pan)
  • Beef roast
  • Pork tenderloin
  • Chicken
  • Ribs
  • Bread

Basically, any food that can be cooked on a grill or campfire can be cooked in an outdoor oven. The difference is the wood-fired heat in the oven. It will give your food flavor that simply can’t be achieved in a standard grill.

paver patterns

A Guide to Paver Patterns

You’ve chosen your paver size and selected a color blend. The next step: choosing a pattern. With so many different options, this is another step that Borgert makes easy with our online stone calculator and resource guide. Seeing paver patterns may help you more easily select the layout that’s right for your project.

Today, we’ll give a brief introduction to some of the more popular paver patterns, as discussed on The Spruce. Visit our product galleries to see more options, and contact us to discuss whether a specific pattern will work with your pavers and in your space.

All of the below examples are taken from our Holland Stone paver page; keep in mind that other paver or slab shapes are capable of different pattern variations. Visit each specific product page or visit our online stone calculator to see all available options!

Herringbone

In this pattern, paving stones are laid at 45- or 90-degree angles. Precision and accuracy are required, making this a more complicated option.

Basketweave

As the name suggests, this pattern looks much like a woven basket. It’s a popular choice for patios.

Running Bond

This popular pattern is fairly easy to lay and provides clean lines, making it a popular choice for walls and patios.

Parquet

There are several different parquet pattern options, all of which add unique visual interest to a patio,  pathway or driveway

efflorescence

Efflorescence on Interlocking Concrete Pavers

If you’ve ever installed interlocking concrete pavers, you may have noticed a white film or haze on the paving stones. This is called efflorescence, a naturally occurring process in any concrete. There is no need for alarm: it does not affect the structural integrity or longevity of the pavers, and it is easy to remove.

What is Efflorescence?

Technically referred to as calcium hydroxide, efflorescence is a product of several different sources. It is carried to the surface of concrete pavers by moisture. There are admixtures used in the manufacturing process to inhibit efflorescence, but there is nothing available to eliminate it. It appears randomly – any concrete can have efflorescence. But it appears more pronounced on concrete paving stones, because it can be seen more easily on colored concrete.

Efflorescence Fades Naturally

In many cases, efflorescence is naturally scoured off as the pavers are compacted during the installation process. If that doesn’t happen, it generally lessens or dissipates completely over time, due to weather and general wear.

Specialty Cleaners Will Speed Removal

For faster removal, Borgert offers cleaners that are specially made for concrete paving stones. This mildly acidic product is safe and product instructions are easy to follow. Borgert recommends that you first use the cleaner on an inconspicuous area, so you know how it works before undertaking the whole project. An important detail: there are several products on the market to remove efflorescence from pavers. Make sure that you use products made specifically for interlocking concrete pavers.

If you have any questions about efflorescence or how to remove it, get in touch.

plants

The Best Plants for your Patio

Do you have plants inside your home? Most of us do – plants improve air quality and add color throughout the house, effectively bringing the outdoors inside. Many people think that, because a patio is already outdoors, it doesn’t need additional plants. The garden is right over there, after all.

But, like indoor plants, incorporating flowers or greenery to a patio can add additional color and vibrancy to your outdoor space, making it even more of a relaxing retreat. Today, we’ll share some of our favorite plants for the patio, with tips on planting in shade and sun from The Spruce.

Best in Full Sun

  • Pelargoniums produce bright clusters of flowers, and do best when placed in full sun and watered regularly.
  • Gardenia hails from the south, making it a good option for sunny patios.

Shade Lovers

  • Caladiums grow well in full shade, but they do not like cold weather. When the temperature goes up, they’ll grow quickly.
  • New Guinea impatiens produce bright, colorful flowers. Keep them out of the hot afternoon sun for maximum growth.

Drought-Tolerant

  • Begonias are hardy, easily tolerating dry conditions, and happy in sun or shade.
  • Lantanas bloom continuously in the summer months, and are especially drought-tolerant when planted in large containers.

Bee-Friendly Plants

  • Pentas have star-shaped flowers in white, pink, red or lavender. These pollinators flower all summer long, reaching 18 to 24 inches by summer’s end.

Whether your patio is large or small, in the sun or in the shade, adding a few plants can enhance the feelings of relaxation and reprieve of any patio.

front yard

Welcome Guests with a Well-Designed Front Yard

We’ve previously discussed tips for creating an inviting front entry, but today we want to tackle another key aspect of a home’s curb appeal: the front yard. With strategic planning and thoughtful design, you can create a front yard that is lovely to look at and welcoming to guests – but that doesn’t require a lot of maintenance from year to year. We’ll share a few tips, inspired by Better Homes and Gardens, below.

Finalize Hardscaping

Hardscaping is the more permanent aspects of landscaping design – the paver walkways, driveways, retaining walls, and the like. (Visit our hardscaping vs. softscaping blog post to learn more.) The first step in overhauling your front yard design is to choose paver products and install these permanent elements. Then, use the color blends as an inspiration for plants, trees, shrubs, and other softscaping components.

Plan to Scale

When it comes to planting beds, think big. Experts advise installing beds that span at least half of the width of the house, and that extend from the house to the sidewalk or road. This will ensure that the beds are to the proper scale to complement the house.

Keep it Simple

It’s incredibly tempting to buy every perennial at the garden store, but it’s best to limit the number of flowering plants in the front yard – at least to start. This will create a more controlled, cohesive look. Start small and add plants as needed.

Repetition is Key

To create unification and symmetry, repeat plant forms and textures strategically throughout the yard. For example, plant a blooming perennial near the sidewalk, then again along the walkway and next to the house.

Design for All Months

When choosing trees and perennials, select plants that will bloom throughout the year, from bulbs that pop up at the first sign of spring to evergreen trees that maintain color in the drab winter.

If you’re planning to incorporate a paver walkway, driveway or retaining wall into your front yard design, give Borgert a call – we can answer questions and direct you to a certified distributor or installer.

Patio Inspiration: Strassen Fire Ring Cap

At Borgert, we want to help you spend as much time outdoors this summer as possible. Even though these summer days are long, the temperature often drops as soon as the sun goes down. But that doesn’t mean you need to leave the patio! Our Strassen fire rings and fire ring caps are the perfect addition to any patio, large or small.

The Strassen fire ring caps are precast, which makes installation fast and maintenance a breeze. In addition, both our caps and firepit pavers are constructed with mortarless veneering, improving safety and durability. The fire ring caps’ clean lines add simplicity to a busy patio, drawing the eye to the desired focal point and creating a focus for patio design and décor.

colors

How to Choose Colors for your Paver Patio

You’ve chosen a paver and decided on the design of your patio. Now all that’s left to do is pick a color. Easy, right? Not necessarily. Often, selecting a color blend that will partner well with the colors of your home, outdoor furniture, and other hardscape or softscape elements can be quite challenging.

Borgert is here to help! We’ve created a color selection guide that lays out the available color options for each of our premium concrete pavers, walls, step units, fireplaces and fire rings. More information is available in our resource guide and 2019 catalog. Today, we’ll share a few tips on choosing colors for your Borgert paver patio.

See Colors in Person

Don’t choose your paver colors based solely on our website photos – that won’t allow you to get a complete and accurate assessment of the shades. Colors vary in print reproduction, so it’s important to find a Borgert certified distributor and view the pavers in person.

Understand the Blend

Our color blends consist of two or three colors. In some, one of the colors is dominant, but in others, the shades are mixed throughout. In addition, some blends contain pavers of each color as well as pavers with blended shades. For best blend results, make sure to select from multiple cubes.

Incorporate Colors into the Pattern

Our resource guide contains several pattern options and ideas. Think about how the colors and blends will factor into the design and the overall look of your patio pattern.

Here are some of our favorite step unit designs. Visit our product gallery to for more inspiration!

Our Limestone color blend creates a look that is both minimalist and sophisticated.

Unique Combinations

Our color blends allow you to customize the exact look of your steps, as demonstrated here in this unique layout of our Minnesota River blend.

Staggered Steps

Contrasting Colors

Use surrounding materials, such as rocks, mulch and wall units, to create contrast with steps. Here, our Buff color blend was installed with lighter-colored rocks and darker mulch to create gorgeous contrast.

patio door

How to Choose a Patio Door

A patio door is more than just functional. With so many different options on the market today, you can choose a door that fits the overall vision for your patio and outdoor space. But the availability of those many options can also make it challenging: how can you decide which door is best for your patio?

Borgert is here to help! We’ll break down the various patio door types and materials, as detailed in Better Homes & Gardens, to help you determine the type of door that will work best for your design, budget, and climate. For more patio inspiration, check out our product galleries to see how our customers have incorporated our premium concrete pavers into their patio designs.

Design Types:

The type of door you choose will likely be determined by cost and space.

  • Sliding: Perhaps the most common type of patio door, these feature doors that move open by sliding on a track. They don’t require any clearance to open, which makes them good for smaller patios or indoor spaces.
  • Swinging: As the name implies, these doors swing open like any standard door in a home. Furniture will need to be placed accordingly to give the doors clearance to open, so they can be more difficult in tight patio spaces.
  • Folding: These doors open in hinges, folding like an accordion with multiple panels (usually three or more). They need some space to open, but generally not as much as swinging doors. Folding doors are often used to create a wide connection with a large outdoor living space.

Material Types:

Temperature, climate and cost will play a big role in the material you choose.

  • Aluminum: This is a lightweight, cost-effective option that does not need painting and can stand up to most weather extremes.
  • Fiberglass: This material does not warp or swell like wood, and it does not need painting.
  • Wood: The cost and characteristics vary based on wood type, but this is generally a costlier option.
  • Steel: This is the strongest option against weather-related maintenance issues, such as rust.
  • Vinyl: A durable, cost-effective option.

The type of glass you choose will also play into the overall cost and durability of your patio door.
